Plans and preparation are underway for a new 5K race near Williston Park.

The Great Neck Historical Society, the Great Neck Park District, and the Town of North Hempstead are currently in the process of recruiting sponsors and other support for the Stepping Stones Lighthouse 5K Race.

So far, 17 sponsors have signed on. These have contributed more than $500, which is about 50% more than what was raised just three weeks ago.

Along with financial sponsors, other area businesses and organizations have stepped up to provide in-kind donations, including flyer and banner printing and security for parking on race day.

One of the sponsors providing parking is the Merchant Marine Academy, which also agreed to help promote the 5k. Another sponsor, the Great Neck Chamber of Commerce, is emailing members to promote the event. Nassau County, King’s Point, and Auxiliary Police will provide security along the race’s route from beginning to end.

The race was first announced in June by the Great Neck Historical Society. It forms part of an ongoing effort and project to save the Stepping Stones Lighthouse. One of the goals of the 5K event is to increase awareness of the structure and educate the public about the importance of preserving it.

The race is scheduled for October 22, with the beginning and end point at Stepping Stones Park in Kings Point. The race begins at 9:00 am but the parking lot will open at 6:30 am.
