New businesses opening in Williamsburg

Publix, a chain of supermarkets based in Florida, has announced it will be moving into the Greater Williamsburg area when it opens a new store in Monticello Marketplace.

The new grocery store will take over the former Martin’s Foods premises, a 69,000 square-foot space that has been closed for some time. Publix is anticipating opening this location, the first on the chain to be located on the Peninsula, in October 2018.

The exact opening date is not set yet, and will depend on several factors including the weather, and how long the permitting process takes. The new market may bring as many as 140 jobs with it, and Publix plans to hold a job fair later in the year as the opening date gets closer.

Publix’s Maria Brous said the company continues to grow, and as part of the process, looks for new locations, as well as existing markets, to open stores to support the growth. She adds that Publix always tries to provide quality merchandise coupled with superior customer service.

Panera Bread is also coming to Williamsburg. The cafe/bakery company has just agreed to lease 4,800 square feet of space in the Lightfoot Marketplace. This is only the second Panera in the county, and will open sometime early in 2019.

When a new business opens, management can make the occasion even more fun by working with a banner printing company to create decorations for the venue.
