The Scottish Dancers are coming

March 25, 2012 by

On Friday, April 6, 2012 Scottish Country Dancing will be held at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, found at 800 South Brush Street in Las Vegas. This event is for people aged 13 and over and begins at 6:30pm running until 8:45pm.

This Scottish Country Dancing is not just the step and fling normally seen at the various festivals and fairs. This dancing is more in the traditional couple’s style and is performed in the ballroom convention, often found in the highlands. Although ballroom in nature, these dances can be graceful and gentle or even joyful and lively and serve as a grand form of cardiovascular exercise. From the first step to the final curtsey, the fun will rise along with the heartbeats. There will be jigs, reels, jaunty, and snappy steps to try out and enjoy. Participants are encouraged to bring soft shoes and wear comfortable clothing.

This event is part of the Southern Nevada Old Time Contra Dancers series, which is a monthly program. Dance Mistress, the renowned Marsden Macrae, is certified through the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. She is always “witty” and fun and participants find it an enjoyable evening. Marsden points out dance missteps to the participants explaining how to improve the steps and shows the participants, by example, how to become better dancers.

In the old days, the dance halls had dance cards prepared by print companies but, today, that is a past art and has been replaced by business card printing. Participants are encouraged to pick up a business card and keep it handy so they can call to see what other dance programs are available. The cost is $5 per person at the door and $4 for members.
