Greenville to host walkathon

April 29, 2017 by

Residents in Greenville and the surrounding areas are getting out their walking shoes in anticipation of the 2017 DrugFree Greenville Walkathon. The event combines physical activity with food, fun, and entertainment.

The DrugFree Greenville initiative is a community coalition that was first founded in the 1980s as a way to support drug prevention efforts within the city. It is an entirely volunteer effort that has had a large impact in the community by combining fun activities with the effort of educating people on the dangers of drug use, and supporting users in kicking the habit. The Walkathon is part of that effort. The first one was hosted in 1989 and raised $29,000.

The walk will proceed over a three-mile track that starts and ends at the farmers’ market and winds through downtown Greenville. A flyer with a map printed on it will be available for all participants. After the walk is over, visitors can get something to eat at Appetite Alley while listening to some live music. This year will also feature a Wave Pool Party which will be held directly after the walk.

The DrugFree Greenville Walkathon will be held on May 6 from 8:00 am to noon at the Farmers’ Market in Downtown Greenville. Participation is free, but donations are greatly appreciated. Anyone looking for more information should visit the website.
