National Estuaries Day to be celebrated this month

September 9, 2017 by

Indian River Lagoon has been designated as an “estuary of national significance” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and because of this, Indian River Lagoon Island will be celebrating National Estuaries Day in a few weeks.

Canoe Quick Trips will be available for those guests who remember to wear their closed-toed water shoes. On these trips, the canoes will glide under mangrove tunnels. If the water level in the Lagoon permits, guests can go seining for marine life and plant mangrove propagules. Kids will be able to go dip netting in the pond and in the lagoon. For those who like to hike, there will be 1.5 miles of nature trails and boardwalks.

The Environmental Learning Center, which is on the 64 acre island, will present a talk about Dolphins. It also will have an interactive discovery station where children can explore a 145-gallon touch tank. Outside the center will be its Imagination Station Play Area.
Port Saint Lucie guests are invited to bring their own snacks, drinks, and possibly picnic lunches to enjoy under the new shade sails at the picnic tables.

All future environmentalists and their families will want to mark their calendars for Saturday, September 23, and go out to Indian River Lagoon Island off the coast south of Melbourne between the hours of 9:00 am and 1:00 pm.
