Fire maintains strong record over Royals

October 18, 2017 by

The football team at Southeastern University in Lakeland defeated its rival Warner on October 7 at Victory Field.

This is the fourth time the Fire have defeated the Royals with a win in triple-overtime last year. Quarterback Jonathan Pearce and his teammates were looking forward to the match and came out victorious and undefeated against Warner with a final score of 55-14.

Pearce completed just over half of the game’s passes, beating his career record in doing so. Jarrell Reynolds had 62 running yards, giving him his 4,000-yard career mark along with three touchdowns. He, Pearce, and Kamario Bell drove home the win with their field control despite not having their regular receiver, Quev Gonzales, available.

Over 2,000 fans came out to see the game, which started more than an hour and a half late because there was lightning in the sky. However, they were able to witness the Fire take a 31-point lead by halftime having gained 24 points in less than 15 minutes.

According to Pearce, seniors are especially happy about the win as it was the last year they could play against the Royals before graduating.

To show school pride, universities sometimes place banners outside their gym or athletics department detailing their wins, or to be held aloft at the next game as the team takes to the field.
