Massapequa walks for a cause

September 10, 2018 by

The upcoming Optimism Walk is designed to spread information about Parkinson’s disease and raise funds for research.

Likely to attract the attention of Massapequa Park residents, the one-mile walk is a non-competitive event that incorporates family-friendly activities and focuses on community support and engagement. No participants have an obligation to walk the full mile. The organizers of the Optimism Walk want everyone to feel welcome and encourage all community members to take part in as much of the event as they choose. A wheelchair accessible route is available too.

The money raised during this event helps the American Parkinson Disease Association (ADPA) with its attempts to educate and inform everyone about the disease and the efforts and advancements in treatment. The APDA has raised more $171m for the cause since beginning in 1961 and is the largest grassroots organization of its kind.

Businesses and individuals can help by fundraising prior to the event. The organizers have templates and other tips to aid in this effort. Businesses can consider brochure printing to draw interest at their place of business and to help advertise the event to their clientele.

Prizes for fundraising include T-shirts, hats, and medals with membership to the Circle of Optimism.

In addition to the walk, the day will include refreshments, music and giveaways and more. The event takes place regardless of the weather on September 22. Check-in time is 9:00 AM and the walk begins at 10:00 AM at the Marjorie R. Post Community Park at the intersection of Unqua and Merrick Roads. Participants should register at the APDA donor drive weblink prior to the event, and can do so free of charge.
