Murray Hill residents invited to explore area’s past

April 16, 2017 by

During World War I, soldiers, marines, and sailors departed from New York on their way to fight in Europe, and members of the public from Murray Hill are invited to come and learn more about the experiences of these young men.

The New York Transit Museum will be hosting a special event that marks the centennial of The Great War. Participants can pack a picnic basket and retrace the route these military personnel would have taken on their way for training in Bronx’s Van Cortland Park.

Participants will ride out to the park where they can explore the grounds and, if they wish, they can opt to participate in a walking tour that will allow them to view some of the area’s sites that were important long ago. This portion of the activity will be led by a representative of the Bronx County Historical Society, and all are invited. Those who plan an event like this can use booklet printing to provide brochures that give further details about the experiences these men would have had before being deployed overseas.

The Nostalgia Ride to Van Cortland Park will depart from the museum on May 6 at 11:00 am and it will return in the afternoon. Guests can opt to take part in the guided tour or simply enjoy the ride. Additional information can be found on the institution’s website.

Event planned to help feed the hungry in Murray Hill

February 3, 2017 by

As winter turns to spring, several restaurants from Murray Hill will be joining others across the city, and members of the public as well, in helping to feed the less fortunate.

According to the event’s organizers, as many as 20% of the area’s residents have issues with food insecurity. Brooklynfeeds will be seeking to both raise awareness and funding for not-for-profit groups that work to make sure that everyone has enough to eat. Those who plan a locally based event like this can use poster printing to create materials that market it throughout the community.

Participating eateries have agreed to donate a portion of their day’s profits to the organization of its choice, so long as it is one that addresses the issue of food insecurity in the community. The organizers have already been able to secure the participation of several local establishments and they have put a call out to any others that are willing to lend a hand. Anyone who is interested in lending their support or finding other ways they can help can do so by contacting jfriedlin@hungrymktg.com.

The Brookynfeeds day of action has been planned for March 7. A listing of businesses that have chosen to participate, as well as further details about the event itself and the establishments that are lending it their financial support, can be found by visiting its website.
