Youth in the Santa Rosa and the surrounding areas are shouting ‘en garde’ for the Swords by the Bay Super Youth Competition 2017.

The event promises national recognition and awards for the best swordfighters in the region. The competition will be divided into four categories: Youth 10, Youth 12, Youth 14, and Cadet. The types of fencing included are foil, epee, and sabre. The event serves as a national qualifying round for fencers in these categories, meaning the best will get to move on to a national competition. In order to compete, combatants must show proof of age, as well as proof of membership in the US Fencing Association (USFA).

The fights will begin with rounds of five touches or three minutes and then the winners will move into direct elimination rounds of fifteen touches or nine minutes. National ranking points will be assigned to the top 40% of combatants. The top player both male and female of each category and type will receive an award of a custom made silver broadsword, with an engraving of the players’ names made using printing services.

The Swords by the Bay SYC will be held from March 3 to 5 starting at 8:00 am every day at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds, located at 1350 Bennett Valley Rd. Registration to compete costs $210. Anyone interested in more info should visit the website.
