Potomac School Athletics Center gifted with $12m

November 11, 2018 by

The generosity of the Spangler family has provided the Potomac School’s planned for Center for Athletics and Community with one of the biggest gifts in school history.

John Kowalik, the head of school for McLean’s Potomac School, credited the Spangler family’s $12m donation with providing incredible momentum to the school’s fundraising efforts on behalf of the Center, and inspiring financial support from others.

Fundraising efforts are often augmented by assistance from print shops to make the case in for projects such as this one.

The guiding force behind the Spangler family’s donation was Potomac Board of Trustees member Dr. Abigail Spangler’s father, C.D. Spangler, Jr. A University of North Carolina former president, C.D. Spangler, Jr. was also a former president of the Board of Overseers at Harvard.

The cost for the new athletic center is anticipated to be $37m, and so far $31m has been raised from a total of 78 donors. Fundraising will carry on until the remaining $6m is raised.

The new facility’s objective is to support the 26-sport athletic program. The 76,500-square-foot center will include seven squash courts, an indoor jogging track, three practice basketball courts and a competitive court, a cardio room, a weight room, and flexible gathering areas.

Construction began in July of this year and the center is expected to be operational in late fall 2019.
