The Certificate of Achievement for Planning Excellence for 2017 has been awarded to the city of Tyler.

There were 36 cities in Texas that were recognized across the state, and this is the third year that the award has been given to the department.

The Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association presents this certificate as a way to recognize Planning Departments of cities. It rewards those that show how they increase the awareness of professional planning and demonstrate their involvement in the community through economic development.

Kyle Kingma, Planning Manager, commented that the award recognizes the support the city has given for various planning initiatives and for the training it has given to its professional planners and planning commissioners.

A collaborative relationship is established with the Planning and Zoning Commissioners, the staff of the City, and the City Council to ensure that the efforts of the Planning Department not only maintain the attractiveness of the City, but also accommodate growth. Kingma added that these types of partnerships and its communication with the public helps the City to keep improving.

Communication with residents of the city can be facilitated by working with various print companies to create brochures and other printed materials which keep can residents informed of the activities of a city such as Tyler, and request input on projects when needed.
