Torrington readies for Memorial Day

May 28, 2017 by

Torrington’s Veterans Support Committee is busily getting ready for the upcoming Memorial Day festivities. This year, the parade theme will be ‘Duty, Honor, Country’.

There will be the traditional floats, bands and marching units. Torrington Public Schools will have the 7th and 8th grade band in the parade. The St. Peter Drum Corps will also be there. Veterans are invited to either walk the 2.1-mile route or ride on an open trailer provided by the Veterans Support Committee. Units that have already signed up will want to get any banner printing done finalized this weekend.

The 9th Annual Memorial Day Essay Competition will have the theme ‘What do we owe to those who have served and why?’ The competition is open to Torrington’s middle school and high school students, and each essay will be limited to 400 to 500 words. The winner will be an honoree in the Memorial Day Parade and in the Memorial Day Ceremony. First prize will be $100.

Parade trophies will be presented in Coe Park after the parade right before the Memorial Day Ceremony.

The parade will be tomorrow, May 29, rain or shine, getting started at 9:30 am. It will begin and end in Coe Park located at 153 S. Main Street, Torrington. The Memorial Day Ceremony will also be in the park following the parade.
