Torrington families celebrate the New Year

December 16, 2017 by

Families in Torrington may want to head out to Hartford for First Night Hartford 2018.

Kids can enjoy the vintage 1914 carousel, where they can ride one of the 48 hand-carved wooden horses and eat snacks. They can make hand-crafted holiday cards to send to local soldiers serving away from home, make slime at the Science Center, get their faces painted, and participate in the Kids Fest at the Connecticut’s Old State House. In the state house, kids will be meeting Gizmo the therapy dog, doing crafts relating to the building’s reopening, meeting costumed interpreters on a tour through the building, and viewing a multimedia exhibit.

Grownups may enjoy the Architectural Treasures of Hartford as they take a brief walking tour, where they will get information of old buildings in the center of the city. There will be 15-minute horse-drawn wagon rides available for a small fee.

Everyone will want to get some ice skating in and make a lot of noise in the Grand Procession. This will be in the early evening and everyone is invited to wear holiday masks and hats, and get one of the hand percussion instruments that will be handed out.

Live music and theatrical performances will be presented throughout the day and into the night. Fireworks will be at 6:00 pm and midnight.

First Night Hartford 2018 will be Sunday, December 31 from 2:00 pm until midnight in downtown Hartford.
