Cafe coming to St. Louis Dogtown neighborhood

March 23, 2018 by

Sisters Megan Cobb and Erika Darrough grew up near Dogtown, and listened when they were told the neighborhood needed a coffee shop and an ice cream shop. They have decided to run a cafe that serves both, and are getting set to open Sweet EM’s in a few weeks.

The cafe will take over the premises formerly occupied by O’Malley’s Irish Shop on Clayton Avenue.

The duo will stock their coffee bar with coffee products from Kaldi, a St. Louis coffee roaster, and the ice cream shop with Cedar Crest Ice Cream from Wisconsin. The hope the combination will bring customers who pick up a morning latte, then come back with their children to get some ice cream at night.

Working to get the store open has led to them constructing a coffee bar as well as adding a kitchen. The sisters say the community has rallied behind their efforts.

As the shop gets going, they plan to open at 7:00 am every day, closing at 7:00 pm on weekdays and a little later on weekends. They may expand their hours during the summer, and are considering adding more items to their menu, but initially they want to take it easy and see how Dogtown responds.

The sisters are planning a soft opening soon, with a grand opening slated for April 7.

When businesses like this open, managers might distribute promotional products to thank their first customers, and build brand recognition.
