Tempe couple proves to be lucky once again

Most people dream of winning the lottery just once in their lives, but for Diane and Kerry Carmichael of Tempe, that dream has come true not once, but twice.

The couple first won the lottery in 1995. At that time, they won $2.5m in the Arizona Lottery’s ‘The Pick’ game. They won again on March 6, when they picked the winning numbers for the $1m Powerball drawing. Both tickets were bought at the same lottery office, in Phoenix, on University Drive.

Diane Carmichael jokingly pointed out that “good things come in threes,” and that the couple has two down and one more winning ticket to go.

The Carmichaels are still receiving an annuity from their winning 1995 ticket. Each year, they receive $125,000 from the $2.5 million win. 2014 will be the last year for their annuity, so the Powerball win has come just in time. The Carmichaels are both retired and say that they plan on speaking to their financial advisor on how best to handle their second windfall.

Although their win seems like a one in a million shot, it is actually not. Since the Powerball drawing came to the state in January 2012, there have been 19 million-dollar prizes awarded, including the Carmichaels’. The $1m prize is the second prize drawing for Powerball.

The next Powerball drawing will be on March 17, with an estimated $150m jackpot. Tempe print companies better be ready to print a lot of tickets for people
