Tempe balloon enthusiasts readying for sky-high weekend

Tempe residents may want to mark their calendars, as next-door-neighbor Gilbert will be hosting the annual Arizona Balloon Classic. The three-day festival will include a balloon race, an evening glow, morning launches, and balloon rides.

The Arizona Balloon Classic is new among the many balloon events held throughout the Phoenix area each year, but has rapidly become one of the favorites. The venue for the event has proven to be very popular and, as a result, crowds have grown every year. This year’s attendance is expected to be in the thousands.

The main attraction at the Classic will be the Hare and Hound Races, where one balloon (the hound) flies low to the ground and drops a target. After it clears the area, other balloons (the hounds) fly close to the target zone and drop bean bags—the one with the closest bag wins.

Those who attend the Classic should be sure to bring their cameras as their will be lots of opportunities for picture taking—some may even wish to work with print companies for postcard printing.

The Arizona Balloon Classic will be held over three days; Friday December 13 from 3:30 pm to 9:30 pm, Saturday from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm, and Sunday from 7:00 am to 10:00 am. It will be held at the Gilbert Civic Center. Tickets at the door will cost $10 per person (children under 11 and military personnel get in free). Parking will be free for everyone.
