Mesa in for comic capers this weekend

Mesa superheroes will be able to don their capes, boots, and other defining paraphernalia and head for the 2014 Amazing Arizona Comic Con, sponsored by Samurai Comics, this weekend.

For three days, revelers can be a part of the Con’s Cosplay (dressing as a video game, book or movie character), watch the Zombie Beauty Pageant, and take the family to Kids’ Day. More than 90 exhibitors and 150 Arizonan artists will be on hand.

The Zombie Beauty Pageant will grace the first day. This is an event where “beauty is in the eye of the one who holds yours.”

Kids’ Day, the final day of the event, will include a costume contest and free sketches from Phineas & Ferb artist Mat Nastos, and My Little Pony artist Tony Fleece. The art and publishing side of the event might attract one or two print company professionals in the area.

Sunday Morning cartoons will be shown on the big screen and competitive video games will be available in the Giant Video Game Arena on the Convention Floor.

Special guests this year will be Robert Kirkman, the creator and writer for the popular TV series ‘Walking Dead’, along with some other names associated with the show’s productions. Other guests will include Geoff Johns of Image Comic, who is also the founder and creator of X-Force.

Comic Con will take place at the Phoenix Convention Center 100 N. Third St on January 24 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, January 25 from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, and January 26 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
