Gilbert high-schoolers warm up for 5K

August 9, 2013 by

Gilbert residents are invited to participate in an evening of friendly competition for the benefit of young athletes in their community.

Toward the end of the month, the Beat the Heat 5K Knight Run will be taking place at Higley High School. The demand for flyer printing may be increasing as the sponsors and organizers of this summer tradition work to recruit participants.

Higley High has been hosting this fundraising event for the past six years. Proceeds always go toward the school’s cross-country programs for boys and girls. The name of the race is a reference to Higley’s athletic teams, which are all known as the Knights, as well as to the time of day during which the event will occur.

The 5K will be held at a later hour so that participants can avoid the intensity of Arizona’s summer sun. Runners will get some exercise for a good cause as they make their way around a well-lit course.

Attendees of all ages will be encouraged to run. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest contenders in each age group, and overall winners will be announced as well.

Those who would rather not run will be welcome to walk or simply cheer on the athletes as they head toward the finish line. All attendees will be urged to socialize with those around them to build a greater sense of community.

The 5K is scheduled for Friday, August 23 at 7:00 pm, and tickets will cost $22. Higley High is located at 4068 East Pecos Road.
