Southgate VFW holds quarter auction

Residents in Southgate are breaking open their piggy banks and looking under couch cushions in anticipation of the Ninth District VFW Auxiliary Quarter Auction Fundraiser.

The event brings together the fun of an auction with a little bit of luck in order to help support local veterans’ services.

The concept of a quarter auction is a mixture of raffle and auction. Various businesses around Southgate have donated a number of items from promotional products, like gift baskets and service coupons, to high ticket items like electronics and home goods. Participants will be able to purchase a numbered paddle at the beginning of the event for a donation fee. When an item comes up in the auction, the auctioneer will inform the audience if it is a one-quarter or a two-quarter auction. It is up to each person then to decide if they will ‘bid’ on the item, putting in the number of their paddle along with the one or two quarters the auctioneer requested. Finally, a number will be drawn and that person will be the lucky recipient of the item.

All fund raised by this auction go to support the efforts of VFW Post 3141 and the Ladies Auxiliary. The posting has been around for 75 years and offers a lot of medical and social support for veterans in the Southgate region.

The Ninth District VFW Auxiliary Quarter Auction Fundraiser will be held on October 7 starting at 7:00 pm at the VFW building, located at 6 Electric Ave. The donation price for a paddle has not yet been announced. Anyone interested in more information should contact the VFW directly.
