Southgate to hold Memorial Day parade

May 20, 2017 by

Residents in Southgate and the surrounding areas are looking forward to the return of the city’s annual Memorial Day Parade. The event also features a memorial ceremony and more.

Though the theme to this year’s parade is open, visitors can expect all the floats, vehicles, and participants to have a common respect and honor for the nation’s fallen soldiers. The procession will wrap through the center of town, finally ending at the Veterans’ Memorial Park. Participants this year include the Southgate School Marching Band, a lineup of classic cars from the Country Cruisers, the VFW, the police, and fire departments.

After the parade is over, the mayor and the city government will lead a remembrance ceremony at the park. Since Memorial Day is meant to celebrate all Americans lost in combat, proper decorum and reverence is expected at the ceremony. After the remembrance is concluded, the VFW will open their halls for a social hour with refreshments, beverages, and more. More information about the social is available in the VFW’s newsletter printing.

The Memorial Day Parade will begin at 10:00 am on May 29 at the corner of Bluegrass and Electric and continue down Blatt, Evergreen, and Walnut St. towards the Veterans’ Memorial Park. Attendance is free to the public. Anyone looking for more info should contact the city directly or visit the website.
