Watch or take part in the Senior Olympics in Memphis

The 30th Memphis District Tennessee Senior Olympics will take place in Memphis from April 16-27. Various venues throughout the city will host the athletic events. Entry fee for the Senior Olympics is $30 for the first 10 events and $3 for each additional one; bowling has an extra $5.25 charge and for those competing in golf a cart costs an additional $14.

The opening ceremonies will be held at the Orange Mound Centre on April 17 and will include dinner; this event is free to athletes and $6 for their guests. Athletes will also be given official Senior Olympics t-shirts. The closing ceremony luncheon will take place at the Frayser-Raleigh Senior Center; again it is free for athletes and $6 for their guests.

The Memphis District Tennessee Senior Olympics are open to men and women aged 50 who live within a 30 mile radius of the Tennessee state line. There are 10 age divisions in which the athletes compete. The sports included are golf, pickleball, shuffleboard, table tennis, horse shoes, racquetball, softball throw, volleyball, bowling and hot shot. Medals are awarded for first, second and third in each event the fourth place finisher receives a ribbon. Memphis printing companies will no doubt be helping to provide the necessary number of ribbons and the official t-shirts.

The Senior Olympics exist

“to recognize people who have achieved and maintained good health throughout their lives.”

They are a great reminder that those over 50 are still as active and competitive as their younger counterparts.
