Matthews-area shopping center to be home of new Publix store

August 20, 2013 by

Publix Super Markets Inc. recently announced that it will be opening another new store in the Charlotte area of which Matthews is a close suburb.

The store will be located in a new shopping center to be called Mint Hill Commons which is being developed by Stiles Corporation, a commercial real estate firm based in Florida. The store will be 49,000 square feet in size and include a pharmacy and drive-thru. A spokeswoman for the company has said the plans for the store are for it to open in late 2014 but had no details on how many jobs would be created in the local area. She added that typically Publix relocates some of its current employees from its base in Florida so as to maintain the culture of the company but it will be looking to add new jobs in the state.

According to a company spokeswoman, Publix is serious about expanding into North Carolina. This store makes the fifth one that the company has or will be opening in the Charlotte area in the past two years. The competition with regards to the grocery market in the Charlotte area is strengthening with stores such as Walmart Neighborhood Market and Whole Foods opening locations in Charlotte. Many supermarket experts view Publix as a tough competitor against the largest stores as well such as Food Lion and Harris Teeter.

No doubt the company has been using brochure printers to make the residents of places such as Matthews aware of the new store and its multitude of offerings.
