New class to offer fun with fungi

Mushrooms are a culinary treat that is enjoyed by many, and a Newnan area workshop will share secrets of how they can be grown at home.

Each person who participates in Serenbe Farms’ “Oyster Mushrooms and Mimosas” learning session will find out how they can grow nutritious oyster mushrooms using a certified organic log that they will inoculate and bring home with them. The planners noted that the fungi produced this way are often more flavorful than those that are grown for the commercial and retail markets, which are usually grown on sawdust.

Students in the class will learn about the process of growing mushrooms, right from the initial step of selecting a good log to inoculate. They will also find out how to care for their growing crop and also how to harvest them once they are ready to eat. It was explained that, once a log starts producing, it should continue to do so for the next five years.

Once the workshop has been concluded, the students will be welcome to tour the farm and meet some of its residents. The registration fee for the two-hour long session is $100.00 each. Stationery printers can be called upon to produce handouts and other materials for this sort of learning opportunity.

The workshop will be held at 8715 Atlanta Newnan Road in Palmetto. It is scheduled to begin at 11:30 am on September 29th.
