Visit the Martin Luther King Jr Cultural Arts Festival

Many communities in South Florida are having celebrations around Martin Luther King Day and Plant City is no exception. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Arts Festival will take place between January 13 and January 16, 2012. There will lots of free activities for the whole family.

The festival will feature the Freedom parade through downtown, a full carnival midway, a “step and dance” dance competition, the Motown Revue, a freedom walk, and a leadership breakfast. There is also a street festival in nearby Tampa on the weekend of January 14-15. No doubt Plant City printing companies will be busy printing tickets, banners, posters and various promotional items leading up to the festival.

The opening ceremonies will take place at the MLK Recreation Center on January 13 at 11:30am. The Lincoln IB Elementary Choir will be performing. The carnival midway will be set up outside the MLK Sports Complex on Saturday and will feature rides, concessions and vendors of all kinds. The Freedom Parade will also take place on Saturday.

The leadership breakfast will take place on January 15 at the Red Rose Inn & Suites from 7:30-9 am. Guest speaker will be Albert Dotson Jr. Officials from around the state, business and church leaders are likely to attend. Several community awards are also given out, these include the E.L. Bing award for education, the Sadye Martin for community service, the Dr. MLK Jr. award for leadership and the Improvement League’s President Award. Tickets are $25.

The festival will end on January 16 with the Freedom Walk which will start at Bing Rooming House African American Museum. Vendors will also be selling souvenirs.
