Regatta to sail in next week

January 17, 2013 by

For any sailing enthusiast, Key West is the place to be next week. Miami area residents willing to make the three-hour drive, or sail their own boat down to Key West, will see one of the most talked about sailing competitions in the world.

Yachting teams competing from at least 20 states and 12 foreign countries are already registered with the possibility of more entering at the last minute.

Famed sail designer and builder, The Quantum Sail Design Group, presents the regatta, which features sailboat ranging from a little over 22 feet, all the way up to 52-footers. The race counts among its participants Olympian Tommaso Chieffi and European champion Riccardo Simoneschi from Italy. Americans to watch include Dennis Conner, a four-time winner of the America’s Cup, and Bill Hardesty, the 2011 Rolex yachtsman of the year.

Hopefully, race officials will make use of catalog printing for their event so that spectators have access to background information on the race, can keep score, and are able to catch up on the more noteworthy entrants. With the several classes of boats participating and the various heats, printed material will make for a more enjoyable experience. Keeping track of the boats during the race will not be easy as there are currently 127 sailboats entered.

Although the Quantum Key West 2013 starts on Sunday, January 20 for the public, it begins at 1:00 pm tomorrow for those who are racing with the One Design Crew Weigh-In (KEL). Those who wish to make the trip and want more information can visit the event’s website or phone 781-639-9545.
