Further growth planned for PortMiami

January 8, 2014 by

PortMiami has announced that more than 4 million passengers came through its gates in the year leading up to September 2013.

Now, the port has decided to build upon last year’s expansion, which was the largest single season growth ever, with the addition of two new cruise brands and three newly built cruise ships. Miami plays a prominent role in numerous economic sectors including its position as the country’s premier port for cruise ships and this year the cruise season will see two new ships calling PortMiami home: the MSC Divina, of MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Getaway.

Norwegian has promised to generate movement of an additional million passengers in fiscal year 2014 with an increase to 1.2 million in 2015 and 1.3 million the following year. The Norwegian Getaway will begin sailing out of Miami year-round beginning in February. Additionally, Norwegian Cruise Line has come to an agreement just this last month to base yet another one of its new ships here full time.

The Miami-Dade County Commissioners approved a resolution where as the port agrees to pay $3 million in marketing costs prior to the delivery of the 4,200-passenger Norwegian Escape in the fall of 2015. Promotion of a cruise line or an individual ship can take various forms. When printing services are used to produce brochures, complete with colored photographs, prospective passengers are provided with information in a form that they can refer to at their leisure.

It looks as though Miami is in no danger of losing its nickname of “Cruise Capital of the World” as its growth will continue in 2014 and beyond.
