2013 Lauderdale Air Show on the runway to success

The 2013 Lauderdale Air Show may not get underway until this weekend, but it has already been deemed a success, following record ticket sales for the event.

Parachute jumps, aircraft demonstrations, and aerobatic displays will enthrall the crowds on Fort Lauderdale beach. The tourist industry in Fort Lauderdale has also benefited from the success of the event, with many hotels and establishments being fully booked. Local print companies may also have had an increase in stationery printing services to promote the event.

Although budget cuts meant that the lineup for the air show is slightly different to previous years, huge crowds are still sure to turn out for the event. Following necessary changes to the schedule, performances will be given by the Black Diamond Jet Team, Geico Skytypers, and the Red Bull Helicopter.

The event previously took place as an air and sea show but didn’t perform from 2008 to 2011. It was re-introduced in 2012 just as an air show, although the second day was cancelled due to severe weather conditions. The economy was boosted by around $5m during the Air & Sea Show, according to data released by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Last year’s event drew crowds of around 475,000 to watch the opening day, with local bars, restaurants, and hotels being busy all weekend. This year, as part of the 500th anniversary celebrations for Florida, the parachute demonstration team from the Spanish Air Force will perform its first air show in the country in over 10 years. It all happens this weekend, April 20-21.
