Salt & Straw now open in San Diego

Salt & Straw, an iconic Portland, Oregon, ice cream shop, has a new location in San Diego. People who have been craving the store’s unusual flavors can now find them in Little Italy, at 1670 India Street.

Salt & Straw is a family-run company that has made its reputation by handcrafting its ice cream in small batches of gourmet flavors. The ice cream makers use all-natural cream from Chino, California’s Scott Brothers Dairy. They also develop flavors that reflect the market they serve, as well as rotating seasonal flavors monthly. They make the seasonal flavors ingredients from the local area.

Among the favors Salt & Straw is known for are Honey Lavender, Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, Almond Brittle with Salted Ganache, and Freckled Woodblock Chocolate. In order to create flavors specific to San Diego, the company is teaming up with local companies like the Belching Beaver Brewery and James Coffee, and using their products in the ice cream.

They have come up with creations like ‘James Coffee and Compartes Love Nuts’, which they have made by using James Coffee’s cold brew mixed with caramel-covered, chocolate-dipped pecans from Compartes, a gourmet chocolatier. The Belching Beaver Brewery’s Peanut Butter Milk Stout turns up in their ‘Peanut Butter Stout with Chocolate Chicharron’.

Enterprises like this can distribute promotional products to new customers, both to say thank you and to help spread the word that the location is open.
