Hilton to manage the Hotel Del

The Hotel del Coronado, known locally as the “Del” and used for location shooting of the film ‘Some Like It Hot’, will be managed by the Hilton Hotel chain soon. The Del will join the hospitality giant’s Curio Collection of properties.

The Blackstone Group, which owns the Del, will remain in place, but turn management of the 757-room resort, which lies directly on the beach in Coronado, over to Hilton. However, Hilton has already said it will not be making physical changes to the property, and the only sign of Hilton’s presence will be a discreet plaque or two near the door. Mark Nogal of Hilton says the corporation has no desire to destroy the hotel’s independence.

Blackstone has agreed to the transaction because doing so will put the power of the Hilton name, and its extensive marketing efforts and buying power, behind the Del, while still allowing it to remain a San Diego landmark.

Hilton’s Curio brand was created about three years ago to handle four- and five-star properties. The organization currently has 39 hotels in its inventory, including New York’s Renwick, The Darcy in Washington, D.C., and the Boulders Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. The organization has only two hotels in California—the Hotel La Jolla, and now the Del.

With the help of a brochure printing company, past and present guests can be kept informed of any hotel changing hands.
