Redondo Beach surfer invited to prestigious big wave competition

November 10, 2017 by

Amateur surfer Angelo Luhrsen, who has tackled some immensely large waves at Redondo Beach, received an invitation to take part in the Nelscott Reef Big Wave Pro/Am event, the date of which is as yet undetermined.

Nelscott Reef may not be as well-known as Mavericks in the northern part of the state, or Waimea Bay in Hawaii, but the surfing location has gained respect for its big wave competitions. The Nelscott Reef is located a mile off the coast of Lincoln City, Oregon and each winter, when conditions are ideal, some of the west coast’s biggest waves form. Entrepreneurial local photographers can use this opportunity to create their own surfing-centric calendars.

In 2015, Luhrsen qualified for the Nelscott Reef competition by coming in fifth in a preliminary meet, but the winter event was not held last year. It was this year’s (2017-2018) sponsor, Dive N’ Surf, that issued the invitation to Luhrsen, who has surfed swells reaching nearly 50 feet at the Redondo Beach break wall.

Although the waves at Nelscott Reef can be impressive, they are not reliable and all organizers and competitors can do is hope for optimal weather conditions. The event takes place when clean swells develop near 25 feet high between October 1 and March 31. Once the organizers give the go-ahead, contestants have three days to reach Lincoln City.
