University near Williston Park puts on premiere of play

Students from the Department of Theater at Adelphi University in Garden City, just a few miles from Williston Park, will wow their classmates and neighbors with a new play starting next week.

Under the direction of Maggie Lally, the theater department aims to bring new plays to the stage during the current season. Lally recently returned from a sabbatical during which she made connections with playwright-centric theaters.

The department’s next play, Generation T, by Pia Wilson, had a reading at The Classical Theatre of Harlem in 2012 but has yet to be produced. The theater department could use poster printing to advertise the premiere of the play.

The play focuses on two Marines who have returned from fighting in Afghanistan. They struggle to settle back into civilian life while everyone around them expresses indifference or a lack of understanding.

Wilson has been working closely with Lally (who is directing the play) and the student actors, designers, and technicians. Playwright Pia Wilson was a resident with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace program in 2012. In 2011, she was a finalist for the Heideman Award for the short play ‘Turning the Glass Around’.

Tickets to Generation T are $20 and are available for purchases at the Lucia and Steven N. Fischer Box Office or online. The play runs from February 25 through March 2 at the Black Box Theater on campus.
