Port Washington grills for a cause

Resident in Port Washington and the surrounding areas are getting excited for Alper’s Karmacue IX. The event combines cookouts, competition, and activities, all to support a local charity.

Organized every year by Alper’s True Value, the purpose of the festival is to raise funds for and bring more attention to the Port Washington Community Chest, which provides money, clothing, food, and more to local poor and disadvantaged people. All profits from the event go towards the chest.

The heart of the event is the Cook-Off. A total of 12 teams of amateur grillers will go head-to-head to determine who has the best barbecue in town. Competitors will be evaluated by both a panel of celebrity judges and attendees, and can win either the title of BBQ Champion of Port Washington or People’s Choice Champion. Winners will receive special certificates with the official seal and logo design of the Karmacue, as well as bragging rights for the next year.

The rest of the fest is a street fair-style celebration with food trucks, live music, and grill demos. Children in attendance will also be able to visit a crafts area run by Soulshine Art Studio and Initial Stop.

Karmacue IX will be held on May 21 from 12:00 to 4:00 pm at Alper’s True Value, located at 81 Main St. Attendance to the event is free to the public. Anyone looking for more information should visit the website.
