D.C. soccer fans set for Saturday special

Fans of soccer in Washington are set for a treat this weekend, as two of the biggest clubs in Europe play off in a friendly tie at the RFK Stadium.

The London based Chelsea F.C. and Italian club AS Roma will take to the field tomorrow, with poster printing, flyers, and all kinds of marketing no doubt taking place to ensure a good attendance.

With Chelsea, who are known as ‘The Blues’ in their home country, featuring many international players, the crowd should be good.

Some of the more familiar names in the Chelsea ranks include Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, both of whom play for the England national team regularly. There are also rumors that Chelsea are set to sign Wayne Rooney, which would be a real attraction for fans.

It is also worth noting that the English team is the present Europa League champion, so for those not up with soccer, it could be a good start to get to know the game.

Local fans, however, may well want to get behind Roma, as one of the Italian team’s best players is U.S. national midfield player Michael Bradley.

The two teams kick off at 8:00 pm tomorrow, and are in the U.S. as part of their preparations for the new season in Europe, which starts later this month.

‘The Blues’ are playing in the International Champions Cup, taking place in a number of cities including Los Angeles and New York. Roma, meanwhile, are playing in Kansas City and Toronto before coming to D.C.
