Discover how effective speed networking can be

The Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce are presenting a speed networking event at Special Olympics Rhode Island on July 12 from 8:00 am – 9:30 am. Tickets are $5 for chamber members and $15 for non-members, with breakfast included.

Speed networking is very much like speed dating, in that people move around a room and meet different people. The setup sometimes varies; it may involve several people sitting at a table and several of them moving to different tables after meeting everyone there. Alternatively, it could be a one-on-one session in which one person remains seated and the other person moves on to the next person after two or three minutes. Speed networking always has time limitations, hence its name, so the object is to meet as many people as possible.

The main things that business professionals from the area, including nearby Pawtucket, need to remember to bring to a speed networking event is an “elevator pitch” and it is always recommended to engage in some business card printing before attending, so that there will be enough to hand out to everyone they meet. An “elevator pitch” is a 30-60 second speech explaining what a company is about and how the business owner can do to help other companies. The next important thing to consider in speed networking is that contacts must be followed up and any promises made must be kept. In business, a man or woman who does not keep his or her word will find it harder and harder to survive.
