Help house veterans regain their pride

A Housing for Homeless Veterans fundraiser will take place at the Holiday Inn Pittsburgh Airport on January 14th from 5:30 pm. Tickets are $25 per person and includes dinner and a program booklet.

The event will be sponsored by the Pennsylvania American Legion Housing for Homeless Veterans organization which aims to provide “clean transitional housing” to veterans and to “help them become productive taxpaying citizens.” There will be a cash bar and dinner will be served at 7 pm. Those interested in helping veterans will most likely come from all over Allegheny County, including North Versailles.

In order to raise more funds, the Housing for Homeless Veterans organization is accepting sponsorships for the program booklet; local brochure printers most likely provided their services at reduced prices to create it. Those who are interested in purchasing advertising in the booklet pay $70 for a full-page ad, $50 for a half-page ad and $50 for a quarter-page ad.

Sadly, many of the veterans returning from overseas wars have a hard time adjusting to life back home. If they are not interested in a career in the military they might have a hard time transferring their skills to a non-military profession. While there are programs to help, sometimes the veterans find that they fall through the cracks. There are numerous stories of ex-military men and women winding up living on the streets. Thankfully, he Pennsylvania American Legion Housing for Homeless Veterans organization and other similar ones throughout the country are providing those men and women with the help they need to become contributing members of society again.
