Doylestown honors Bucks County Poet Laureate

Officials at Bucks County Community College, in Newtown, near Doylestown, were pleased to announce the 36th Bucks County Poet Laureate at the end of October.

Lara Adams Gaydos, a resident of nearby Chalfont, was named the Poet Laureate. Gaydos comes from a family of writers. Her mother was a poet and her father’s short story won the O. Henry Award in 1962. She came to writing later in her life, after pursuing a career as a graphic designer in Colorado Springs, CO.

After returning to Bucks County, Gaydos got plugged in to the poetry community thanks to a flyer, perhaps printed by a Doylestown printing company. The flyer was an announcement for the 2008 poet laureate contest. Although Gaydos did not win that year, she continued to enter. She placed as a runner-up in 2009 and 2010.

Bucks County Community College Professor Emeritus Robert Bense served as the preliminary judge this year. The final judge in this year’s poetry competition was D. Nurkse, who was once the poet laureate of Brooklyn, NY. Nurkse described Gaydos’ poetry as “beautifully realized work.” This year’s runners up included local poets Sandra Becker, Camille Norvaisas, Tom Mallouk, and Jane Mohler. As part of the reward, Gaydos will receive $500 and a proclamation from Bucks County Commissioners.

Gaydos and the runners up will read their work at a reception on December 1 at 2:00 pm. It will be held at the Newtown campus of Bucks County Community College. This year’s winner will also be joined by the poet laureate from 2011, Corie Feiner.
