Allentown baseball team offers unusual giveaway prize

July 1, 2013 by

This summer, Allentown’s minor league baseball team, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, are giving away a somewhat more unusual and substantial prize than the typical inexpensive gifts, such as beach towels and bobblehead dolls.

The team has paired up with the Reichel Funeral Home in Northampton to give away a funeral worth $10,000. Included in the prize package is a $300 floral arrangement for the casket and a $1,500 stone monument for the grave site. All aspects of a typical funeral or memorial service are included in the prize, including embalming or cremation and a place to hold the service.

To win the prize, fans of the baseball team need to submit a 200-word essay. This should describe the entrant’s idea of a good funeral and describe why that person thinks he should win the prize. Essays can be sent to the team by email or regular mail. The deadline for submission is July 31. The team can make use of flyer printing to spread the word of the innovative giveaway contest this summer.

Kurt Landes, general manager for the team, described the contest as the “most highly coveted ‘out-of-the-box’ promotion” in the history of the team. The winner of the contest will be announced at the team’s “Celebration of Life” game on August 20. To be eligible to win, a person has to be present at the game and must be over the age of 18.
