The Long Island Youth Orchestra finished up its season on June 9 with a concert at East Northport’s Elwood Middle School.

The final concert of the season included a send-off for seniors who are graduating and leaving the ranks of the orchestra. Several of the graduating seniors were featured as soloists during the performance, including trumpeter Patricia Luecken, who is from Westbury, and oboist Jiajun Shan, from Woodmere.

The performance on Sunday, June 9 included a number of pieces from well-known classical composers. Among the pieces performed as part of the concert program were ‘Concerto in F minor for Trumpet’ by Bohme, ‘March Militaire Francaise’ by Saint-Saens, and ‘March Slav’ by Tchaikovsky.

This past season marked the 51st for the 90-member orchestra. It is currently in residence at Long Island University and has been for the past 28 years. The orchestra will be holding auditions throughout the summer to replace its graduating members. Flyer printing could help the orchestra spread the word of the audition spots and encourage young musicians to try out.

Auditions started on June 12, and the next round will be on June 19, followed by several in September. Musicians who cannot attend the auditions on the scheduled date are encouraged to schedule a special appointment to try out. The orchestra has openings for strings, brass, and woodwind.

After closing out its season on Long Island, the orchestra is heading across the ocean for a summer tour of Europe. It will perform in Scotland, Ireland, France, and Iceland throughout the month of July.
