PJS receives further froyo option

Capitalising on a surge in popularity of frozen yogurt, or ‘froyo’, a new store selling the ice-cold treat is expected to open in Port Jefferson Station this summer.

Swirls and Twirls has set up camp in the Uncle Guiseppe center, and the company has carried out sign and poster printing to let local froyo freaks know that it will be open in Summer 2013.

It will bring the franchise’s number of Long Island locations up to 10, with outlets already in operation in such areas as West Islip and Smithtown.

A self-service model, Swirls and Twirls highlights on its website that it offers fat, gluten, and sugar free froyo options, and it will provide competition to both Yogo Delish and Red Mango – two similar outlets established in Port Jefferson Station.

The area’s apparent popularity with froyo chains can perhaps be put down in part to its proximity to PJ Cinema, with film and refreshment often coming hand in hand. As well as this, figures published on the website Statistic Brain in October 2012 show that frozen yogurt sales were 8% higher last year than they were the year before, and that nearly 95% of people thought of it as a healthier alternative to ice cream, suggesting that its popularity is nationwide.

Of course, any new business in the area brings with it the welcome prospect of more money going into the region and more job opportunities being created. Taking this into account, a lot of locals might think about patching up their CVs and digital business cards.
