Good fun and good deeds for area residents

With holiday revelry providing some relief from the region’s difficult autumn, there are also many opportunities to help those in need. Since 1947, the ‘Toys for Tots’ program has been doing its part to ensure that all children have a gift on Christmas morning.

Westchester County legislator Jim Maisano and his family will host a collection event in New Rochelle on Saturday, December 15. Between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm at ‘On The Waterfront’ at 2 Pelham Road, Maisano will collect new, unwrapped toys, gift cards and donations. The toys will be made available to youngsters from communities in and around Westchester.

Toys for Tots was founded in Los Angeles by Marine Corps reservist Major William L. Hendricks. In its first year, approximately 5,000 toys were collected, and Toys for Tots quickly grew into a national campaign. Hendricks’ work as Director of Public Relations at Warner Brothers provided ready celebrity sponsorship for the charity’s activities. Through 2011, the program has collected and circulated more than 450 million toys.

The Marine Corps Reservists’ efforts are supplemented by volunteers from local Marine Corps Leagues, local business people, and private citizens. Local collection events, such as that organized by the Maisanos, are assisted by communications and media professionals who may publicize the details and drum up support. Printing companies, radio stations, free event websites, and traditional newspapers and television reporting can all help to make events like these a success.
