Annual Michael McDermott fundraiser held in Nanuet

Earlier this month, the Michael McDermott golf outing, in which more than 150 golfers participated, was held for the 11th year in Pearl River near Nanuet at the Blue Hill Golf course. The event is held in memory of Michael McDermott, who passed away in July 2002 and was a graduate of the high school in 2000.

Flyer and poster printing were probably used to attract as many golfers as possible to this event, as it is a fundraiser for student-athletes of Nanuet High School and other non-profit organizations such as Camp Venture, People to People, and the Special Olympics.

This year’s scholarship was awarded to Michael Buhlmann, who was chosen because he shares with McDermott those special qualities and characteristics that made him a student athlete. Buhlmann will receive $4,000, which he plans to use in order to become a physical therapist.

Buhlmann plans to attend Mount Saint Vincent College in the fall, study biology, and eventually earn a doctorate in physical therapy. As an athlete, he has received four varsity letters for his achievements in wrestling, being an all-division winner three times and a New York State Scholar Athlete three times.

When not going to school or being involved in sports, Buhlmann volunteers over the weekends by training youngsters about nutrition, health, and working out, while attending the Yonkers Charter School of Educational Excellence.

Buhlmann has received additional scholarships including the $1,500 Connor Corish Memorial Scholarship and the $1,000 Third Annual Dan Sullivan Foundation Scholarship.
