New chamber of commerce to serve Deer Park

The businesses of Deer Park, and other communities in the Town of Babylon, will be celebrating an important anniversary in June as the Babylon Town Chamber of Commerce reaches the first year mark.

Formed June 21, 2011, this Chamber was first formed to assist new businesses in the hamlet of West Babylon. However, it didn’t take long for the founders to realize that several communities within the township limits could benefit from the Chamber’s work. Walter Wenzel, president of the new chamber, said:

“We have 15 areas that make up the Town but have only four chambers of commerce. We don’t want to replace the chambers but do want to serve as an umbrella organization.”

Whether a company sells plumbing supplies in Wyandanch or does stationery printing in Deer Park, the Babylon Town Chamber of Commerce is interested in working with them. According to Wenzel, all businesses, regardless of location, product, or service, share common challenges and needs but the chamber’s focus goes beyond established companies and retailers. He went on to say:

“We also want to help those looking to start a business with the basics and let them know what they need to do to grow their business.”

In this first year of operation, the Babylon Town Chamber has attracted 36 members. Active recruitment efforts will continue as the chamber seeks to increase its base in its second year. Wenzel explained:

“We have a very active group of people, but it’s a small group. We have received a lot of interest and we’re going to be out canvassing looking for new members.”
