Mailer Center awards honor American writers

The 5th annual Norman Mailer Center Benefit Gala is taking place this October in New York City.

The gala will raise funds for the many programs provided to students and writers throughout the year. This includes the Writers Colony in Provincetown (which offers month-long fellowships), the Writers Retreat Program, and the American Literature and Society Travel-Study Program. Currently, the organization is raising money to buy the Mailer house in Provincetown where the Writers Colony is held.

This year’s honorees are Maya Angelou, Junot Diaz, and Michael Hastings. The winners of the Mailer Student Writing Awards and the British GQ Norman Mailer Student Writing Award will also be honored at the gala.

It is very likely that this event will attract fans of the written word from all over the area, including Brooklyn. Local print companies have also probably been asked to provide the event program that everyone will receive and the banners to acknowledge contributors. It might also be a great place for writers to network and exchange digital business cards.

The gala is taking place at the New York Public Library on October 17 from 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm. Tickets are $1,000, $2,500 or $4,000, depending on the level of exposure attendees are looking for, and tables of 10 are also available. Those who purchase tables will be recognized in the program and those on the higher range will be acknowledged on banners. For more information about the awards, call 649-961-3240 x1.
