Battle of Barristers softball tournament raises fund to help kids go to camp

Tomorrow, the 27th annual Battle of the Barrister charity softball tournament will take place at Brookdale Park in Montclair, just outside of Newark, to raise money for the Greater Newark Fresh Air Fund. No doubt flyer printing and poster printing are being used by the organization to bring as many people as possible to the event so that money can be raised to send youngsters from the Newark area to camps in the more rural parts of New York and New Jersey this summer.

Competing in the day-long tournament will be lawyers from 11 law firms from Bergen, Essex, and Morris counties. Nine firms are returning from last year’s competition and two new firms have been recruited by Charles C. Carella and his son, Charles M. Carella, who are co-chairs of the fund. Also in the competition will be the insurance company Prudential.

There will be two divisions of six teams each that will compete throughout the day. The winners of each division will play a championship game at Yogi Berra Stadium at Montclair University at 6:30 pm.

According to executive director of the Newark Day Center, Trish Morris-Yamba, this charity softball event raises about one-third of the fund’s annual donations for the year. The Newark Day Center is the agency that administers the fund.

The Carellas agree that raising money for the event is easy as once they let their various contacts, such as clients, restaurants, and other businesses know who benefits from the tournament, the donations just pour in.
