Downtown Newburyport lights up for Halloween

October 16, 2013 by

Seasonal fun begins this weekend in downtown Newburyport with the annual ‘Witches Night Out’. No doubt the Newburyport Chamber of Commerce is using banner printing throughout the city to make residents aware of the adult-only shopping event.

Participating merchants on the night will be opening their shops with special hospitality and offering treats and special sales for the Halloween season. Shoppers are encouraged to dress in costume as various Halloween characters, witches, warlocks, and the like.

The Thirsty Whale will be holding a costume contest and the Tannery Marketplace will have a performance of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ by Cheryl Fischer and friends from the Dance Place. The Bullnose and Flukes and Friends will also be locations for this performance at other times during the evening of this Friday, October 18.

The following evening will see the Great Pumpkin Lighting and Stroll in Market Square. This is the third year for the event, which is open to both children and adults. Bringing a pumpkin to Market Square is encouraged, as it will be placed on the stage and lit. Guests can then take their pumpkins home after the evening.

A votive candle will be given to each family, courtesy of Partridge in a Bear Tree, and all will be lit at dusk. MK Benatti Jewelers will be providing refreshments, WNBP AM 1450 and FM 106.1 will telling some favorites of Halloween, and activities and goodies for children will be provided by Life is Good.

The event runs from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, although the Thriller dance can be seen as early as 5:00 pm.
