August 2, 2012 by

A new initiative has been launched to provide children with essential supplies for the new school year.

Children in Beverly will be celebrating the start of Gear for Grade, as Citizens Bank joins forces with Cradles to Crayons to provide more than 37,000 backpacks for children whose families are on a low income.

Members of the public and customers are welcome to donate essential pieces of school equipment like pencils, glue, folders, notebooks and more until August 10 this year at any branch of Citizens Bank. There are two branches in Beverly waiting for donations. A $50,000 grant is being made by Citizens Bank to pay for almost 5,000 backpacks for local children. This will help Cradles to Crayons to reach their goal of distributing more than 30,000 backpacks to children who need help. To raise publicity for the initiative, the organization may require the help of a local brochure printers, which can provide details of when and where to make donations.

In 2011, it cost the average family in the US $603 to provide back to school basics for their children, according to a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation. For a family which is homeless, on a low income or at-risk, the cost can be overwhelming. According to the founder and CEO of Cradles to Crayons, Lynn Margherio this simple contribution is providing something that many people take for granted, making the start of a new school year a special time for a lot of children.
