Torrington residents look forward to January festival

December 15, 2013 by

To kick off the new year, Torrington theater enthusiasts may want to attend the Musical Theater’s 9th Annual Goodspeed Musicals’ Festival of New Musicals. From staged readings, new music, and lyrics, to seminars and symposiums, this event is a chance to experience the cutting edge of 2014’s up and coming writing and musical talents.

The three-day festival will showcase three new musicals through stage readings at the opera house. This year’s fare is Adam Lives (a musical about discovering and maintaining life’s most important things), The Theory of Relativity (exploring human connections), and A Proper Place (a fantasy based on J.M. Barrie’s The Admirable Crichton). A Noel Coward Symposium and The New Musical Preview, featuring an upcoming musical for the 2014 season, will also be located in the opera house.

The Gelston House, also located on the Goodspeed campus, will offer Festival Cabarets the first two evenings. These events present songs of new artists. Other goings-on at the Gelston House include seminars, the Festival dinner, and a Meet the Writers Reception.

Visitors can take a Goodspeed Opera House tour to examine the award winning theater’s back stage operations or view the music department, costume shop, library and rehearsal studio on the Mid-campus tour. Pictures taken can be used for postcard printing.

This year’s music festival will be held January 17-20, at the Goodspeed Opera House at 8 Main Street, East Haddam, Connecticut. Tickets are available by calling the box office at 860.873.8668.
