SPA moves headquarters to Mt. Pleasant

The State Ports Authority (SPA) of South Carolina recently sold its headquarters building overlooking Charleston Harbor so as to make way for the construction of a new headquarters in Mt. Pleasant at its Wando Welch Terminal.

The new headquarters will be four stories in height and have 424 parking spaces on a parcel of land 19.4 acres in size at the container terminal. There will be additional meeting spaces and conference rooms than the SPA has at its current location. A conceptual plan for the building was recently revived by the town of Mt. Pleasant.

The former headquarters of the SPA was sold to hotel developer Lowe Enterprises, based in Los Angeles, and recently received final approval from the Fiscal Accountability Authority of the state. The sale price was $38 million.

Lowe plans to tear down the existing office building and build a luxury resort on the property, with 225 rooms, a full-service spa and fitness center, and both indoor and outdoor options for dining. It will also provide a continuation of the walking path along Charleston Harbor. Lowe might consider using banners on the property so people in the area can be kept abreast of the progress on the construction.

The SPA will be able to lease back a portion of the property for up to two years while the new headquarters in under construction in Mt. Pleasant.
