Grocery chain plans new store in Mt. Pleasant

Publix Super Markets is planning to add two more stores to the Mt. Pleasant area.

For a future store near Summerville, Publix purchased 10 acres of land for $3.5m and recently signed a lease at a site for a smaller store in Mt. Pleasant.

The space in Mt. Pleasant is in Indigo Square, a mixed-used development of shops and apartments on U.S. Highway 17 across from the Lowe’s home improvement store. A Haven apartment complex with 450 units, a CubeSmart self-storage complex, and a Homes2 Suites by Hilton Hotel with 122 rooms are part of Indigo Square, which consists of 38.5 acres.

The store will be 21, 535 square feet, which is about half the size of a traditional Publix supermarket. Kimberly Reynolds, a spokesperson for Publix, said that a leasing document had been filed with Charleston County. The site is being considered as a storeroom, but a supermarket is allowed to operate on the site.

There are already 12 Publix stores in the Charleston region, with plans to open three more – one in the new Cainhoy Plantation neighborhood, on the peninsula of Charleston, and on James Island.

Stores such as Publix might consider using banner printing companies to create banners for the site, as this is a good way for way those who want to find out what is being planned for the parcel.
