Event to focus on mental health in Morton Grove area schools

There have been increasing numbers of school-age children who need mental health support, and an upcoming Morton Grove area event will give educational professionals an opportunity to learn how to help.

‘School Mental Health Symposium: Transforming the Future For Our Students’, which is being hosted by the Transition Action Network for Mental Health, has been planned to give teachers and other educators skills and knowledge that they can put to use in their classrooms and schools in an effort to support students who have mental health needs. An assortment of professionals will be sharing information and best practices, and participants will also have a chance to network with their colleagues and discuss the challenges this issue presents, with a focus on finding solutions and opportunities.

A variety of information will be shared, including the latest behavioral and brain-based research. A focus will also be on removing the stigma that surrounds mental health and removing the barriers that keep young people from accessing treatment and other options. A print company can design and print brochures and other materials that give information about the community’s mental health supports, which those who participate can distribute to their students.

The event will be held at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines on December 2. There is no charge to participate, and lunch will be provided. The organizers recommend that all who are interested register as soon as possible, as spaces are limited.
